Base Camp Bistro

If you’re lucky enough to be staying at the luxury Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge (and even if you’re not!), Base Camp Bistro is the perfect place to start your day. Not only is the food delicious, but also you can enjoy your morning meal with glorious views of Mount Denali and the Alaska Mountain Range. Seriously, these views almost made me cry!

There’s a breakfast buffet if that’s your jam, but made-to-order menu items will turn your head. Prettiest of all is the Alpenglow Sandwich, served with Alaska salmon lox, shallot cream cheese, beets, cucumbers, avocado, and arugula.

Planning a day hike in Denali National Park? Fill up on the Homestead Scramble, made with eggs, Indian Valley elk sausage, tomato, roasted squash, and mushrooms.

Base Camp Bistro serves coffee roasted by Kaladi Brothers, a state favorite lauded by my Uber driver in Anchorage. Although headquartered in Alaska’s biggest city, the brand is beloved by locals and travelers in Talkeetna, too. When you’re craving a fancier morning drink, Mount Hunter Coffee Co. in the lobby pours an array of lattes, teas, and other beverages.

Tasty lunch and dinner fare is also served at Base Camp Bistro. Think hearty seafood chowder (yes, please!), truffle fries, a caribou meatloaf, or a grilled halibut sandwich.

Flying Squirrel Bakery & Café

Open year-round, Flying Squirrel Bakery & Café serves especially good food at Mile 11 of the Talkeetna Spur, just 3 miles from Downtown Talkeetna. Family-owned and operated, this bakery and eatery features fruits and vegetables grown on their local farm, Birch Creek Ranch.

An array of baked goods will tempt any diner, like traditional rugelach or blueberry rhubarb bars. For a heartier start, order a Breakfast Burrito, Morning Sandwich, or French Toast Casserole. I appreciated gluten-free options for eaters like me, including the shockingly rich dairy-free Black Brownies with a surprising ingredient (black beans!).

Lunch sandwiches, soups, and salads are also available. Come for wood-fired pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer, too.

Pick up one of their artisan breads for a snack later in the day. The rotating menu of homemade all-natural breads includes such temptations as Alaska Barley Bread, Pumpkin Pumpernickel, and Whole Wheat Walnut Raisin.

A darling play area with a make-believe kitchen and toys will keep kids content while parents munch. Meanwhile, grownups will want to peruse the local artwork for sale on the cafe’s cheery tangerine-colored walls.

Kahiltna Birchworks

Did you know birch trees produce syrup similar to maples? I didn’t! Birch syrup has a less sweet, more tangy, and more complex flavor than maple. Also, birches yield three times less than maple trees, which makes it more expensive. I think it’s worth it.

Kahiltna Birchworks in Talkeetna has been tapping trees to make syrup and other products for over 30 years. Visit their Birch Syrup Taste, Tour, and Shop located just one mile from the Parks Highway at Mile 99. The focus here is on the sustainable use of Alaska’s forest resources.

For an affordable fee, attend a 45-minute tour with tasting. Tours start on the hour and take place early June through mid-September from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. You’ll learn about the tapping process amid a forest of beautiful birch trees. Then, sample the golden goodness harvested from the birches, noting the difference in flavors between the reserve harvest and late harvest.

The onsite All Alaska Gift Shop sells goodies made from birch tappings, such as gourmet ketchup, jams, and, of course, syrups. Be sure to buy some Birch Cream Caramels as a sweet and chewy souvenir of your Talkeetna vacation.

Homestead Kitchen

The menu at Homestead Kitchen features authentic Alaskan food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many of the dishes come from the chef’s own grandma’s traditional recipe book.

Find this homey establishment in the heart of the little town of Talkeetna. Order stick-to-your-ribs food options like Corn Fritter Flapjacks served with locally-tapped Kahiltna Gold Birch Syrup with a side of venison sausage for breakfast.

Later in the day, diners enjoy Chickin & Dumplins or sandwiches like the Salmon BLT. Vegetarians, vegans, and those seeking lighter fare will be pleased with a couple of colorful salads bursting with local produce like turnips and roasted beets. Meanwhile, families will appreciate children’s menus for all mealtimes with standard kid favorites.

Save room for dessert! Choose from a daily fruit cobbler, seasonal homemade pie, or Nanner’s Puddin’ with brûléed banana, vanilla pudding, and wafers. I fell in love with Homestead’s crave-able Water Pie, a Depression-era custard tarte made with water, flour, sugar, vanilla extract, butter, and a pie crust. The lard crust is next-level flakey.

In addition to great Talkeetna food, Homestead Kitchen offers an outdoor stage and seating for entertainment. Order craft beers, wine, cocktails, and mocktails to sip on the patio while tapping your toes to live music by local bands.

Opened in the summer of 2024, Homestead Kitchen operates during Talkeetna’s high season (mid-May to mid-September).

Shirley’s Northern Lights Gourmet Ice Cream

If you ask me, ice cream is always a great idea, especially at Shirley’s Northern Lights Gourmet Ice Cream! Find this sweet shop at the corner of Main Street and Talkeetna Spur Road. Choose from a variety of ice cream flavors handmade from local ingredients, such as Sweet Cherry, Almond Mocha, or Cranberry Nut Cheesecake.

The most popular choice, however, is the pretty pink Famous Fireweed. It’s colored with the petals of real Alaskan fireweed wildflowers, but the flavor is a simple honey vanilla. Another top choice is Northern Lights, a blueberry and raspberry combo with brilliant aurora borealis hues.

Denali Brewing Company

Local brewery, Denali Brewing Company offers two locations in Talkeetna. Both are open all year, with shorter hours in winter.

Tasting Room

Denali Brewing Company’s Tasting Room is off Talkeetna Spur Road outside downtown. This is where they produce fresh beers, ciders, meads, and spirits. I got a chance to tour the impressive facility and meet the brewery’s charming founder, Sassan Mossanen.

Stop by to sample a wide variety of alcoholic beverages and eat wood-fired pizza. I enjoyed my visit here so much, I bought a souvenir t-shirt from their onsite store to prove it.

Happily for me, the Tasting Room offers a scrumptious housemade gluten-free pizza crust option. Additionally, there are a few beautiful salads on the menu. The facility is home to a 2,100-square-foot-high tunnel, where they grow produce for a true farm-to-table experience onsite and in town.

Since I eat a mostly wheat-free diet (sensitive tummy, I’m afraid), I skipped the brews and was happy to order a flight of four ciders instead. Usually, I find ciders too sweet for my palate but these tickled my tastebuds. Mossanen suggested I try the Northwest Cider when I told him I love Chardonnay. His recommendation was spot on! Brewpub

On Main Street in Downtown, The Denali Company Brewpub serves the employee-owned brand of craft beverages, plus gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches, and burgers (including a housemade veggie patty). For kids to sip, there’s hot cocoa and cider plus soft drinks and juices. Specialties include smoked brisket, fish ‘n’ chips, and meatloaf. Nearby is the Denali Brewing Company Mercantile where you can purchase merch.

Foraker Restaurant

Make reservations at Foraker Restaurant for farm-to-table fine dining in Talkeetna. Honored with the “Award of Excellence” by Wine Spectator Magazine, the signature restaurant at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge offers elevated cuisine and incredible service. Of course, this high-end restaurant serves the same breathtaking mountain views as the hotel’s more casual dining options.

Honestly, fresh fish tastes better in the 49th state! All restaurants at the lodge pride themselves on serving wild, natural, and sustainable Alaska seafood. Order dishes like Crab Risotto, Pan-seared Alaska Black Cod, or Alaska Weathervane Scallops. Or go all out and splurge on one pound of butter-poached Alaska Red King Crab Legs served with pearl couscous, pattypan squash, red bell pepper, kale, grilled lemon, and drawn butter.

Meat lovers will want a Grilled Pork Chop, Prime Angus Beef Striploin, or Bison Tartare. Meanwhile, vegetarians enjoy options like Acorn Squash Curry. Look for seasonal wine-pairing dinners for a memorable prix fixe multi-course experience.

Basecamp Bar

After a long day of exploring, nothing beats sipping a glass of something tasty and roasting marshmallows by a toasty fire while taking in views of Mounts Denali, Hunter, and Foraker from the patio at Base Camp Bar. (Pick up s’mores fixings in town at Nagley’s General Store.) On a clear day in spring or fall, you just might see the majestic Northern Lights from this tavern at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.
