Whether driving to an exercise class, the mall, or to a restaurant for moms’ night out, if I was going alone — I wanted to borrow my husband’s car. It wasn’t because driving his sports car is so exciting. Sure, it’s much faster and more hip than my minivan, but really, I wanted to use his built-in Bluetooth technology so I could make hands-free cell phone calls while I drove. Well, those days are over, my friends. Now I am perfectly happy driving my van with its scratched side panel and its rear passenger windows smudged up with kids’ fingerprints. The reason why? My Parrot MINIKIT+, a portable and vocal hands-free device that makes it easy and safer to make phone calls while driving. You could win a Parrot MINIKIT+ of your own. Read on to find out how!

Parrot Minikit+ hands-free mobile phone device

If you are like me, you are too busy chopping veggies for dinner (or, well, microwaving packaged things at least), juggling deadlines, and shuttling children to swim lessons, for indulging in such luxuries as grown-up phone conversations with friends. You might also live in one of the 10 U.S. states where talking on a handheld mobile phone while driving is against the law. You would also probably like the convenience of calling your spouse on your way home from picking up the kids from school to see if he remembered to buy milk, without worrying about the dangers of dialing a handheld phone. Am I right?

How the Parrot MINIKIT+ works:

– Attach it to your sun visor.

– To answer an incoming call, just say the words “accept” or “reject” without having to touch your phone or the Parrot MINIKIT+.

– To make a call, press the green button on the Parrot MINIKIT+ and say the name of the person in your mobile phone’s contact list and the Parrot MINIKIT+ will dial the number automatically.

– Before using your Parrot MINIKIT+ the first time, you need to pair it to your phone. To do this, follow the simple instructions provided with your kit. (Full disclosure: my husband did this part for me but I read through the directions and it appears simple enough that even a non-techie like me could manage this.)

Additional Parrot MINIKIT+ features:

– It is compatible with all Bluetooth mobile phones and Smartphones.

– It can manage, simultaneously, two Bluetooth mobile phones (which is convenient if your honey borrows your car or is riding with you).

– Apparently you can vocally send and receive emails and text (SMS) messages via the Parrot MINIKIT+ while keeping both hands on the steering wheel. I have no desire to do this so I haven’t checked out this feature but it sounds much safer than using your hands to text and email while driving.

– For those of you who are madly in love with your iTunes library, you can also listen to your Smartphone’s playlist on the Parrot MINIKIT+.

What I think about Parrot MINIKIT+:

I love being able to keep up with friends and faraway family members while I am on the go using my Parrot MINIKIT+! When I bought my car (okay, van) a couple of years ago, I was bummed out it did not come with the hands-free Bluetooth option but purchasing a vehicle with that built-in technology would have added about a thousand dollars to the sticker price. At $89.99, the Parrot MINIKIT+ is a very affordable way to access this technological convenience.

I think the Parrot MINIKIT+ works just as well as the built-in hands-free mobile technology in my husband’s car. The speaker and receiver are located in the device; they are independent of your car’s stereo (as opposed to built-in systems). I actually prefer this because my kids can listen to music in the backseat while I chat in the front seat. Usually I use my Parrot MINKIT+ only when I am driving alone, but it is handy to be able to call to let the doctor’s office know if we are running late or to ask my husband to put a frozen pizza in the oven.

Would I recommend it to people looking for a hands-free mobile phone option to use while driving? YES!

Would love to win this! With 2 little ones in the car, I never want to have to look down or mess with my phone in the car.

  8. I would love this! I don’t use my phone while driving, unless I am already on a call when I get in, and have it set on speakerphone. This would eliminate the stress of missing a possibly URGENT phone call because I am always on the go!
