11 Tips for Visiting SeaWorld Orlando in the Rain

Orlando overflows with fun attractions for families like SeaWorld. This Florida city also sometimes overflows with rain, especially during hot and humid summer months. Don’t let a little rain ruin your plans. Follow these 11 tips for visiting SeaWorld Orlando on a rainy day!

1. Check the weather forecast.

Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, with scorching temperatures one day and cold rain the next. Be sure to check the forecast before getting to Orlando so you know what to pack. Then, check the weather again before setting off to explore each day.

June is typically the wettest month (which is when I happened to visit), followed by July, August, and September. You can search Weather.com for daily forecasts, a 10-day forecast, and monthly weather planners.

2. Invest in a poncho.

If you have a poncho, pack it. If you don’t, purchase one inside the theme park. You may look goofy, but so will everyone else. I found the blue SeaWorld ponchos to be sturdier and less likely to tear than those available at Disney World.

3. Watch an animal show.

Shows starring flipping dolphins and barking sea lions are a big part of any visit to SeaWorld Orlando. Even when it rains, the show must go on, with animals and their trainers continuing to perform. After all, sea animals certainly don’t mind getting wet!

Most shows offer some sheltered seating for viewers, too. If there is lightning or thunder, however, shows will be canceled until the skies are safer.

4. Cover your stroller.

If visiting SeaWorld Orlando with a baby or toddler, I suggest purchasing a stroller rain cover before your trip. If you forget, you might want to buy an additional poncho to drape over your stroller. Of course, make sure it is vented so your child can breathe! Also, make sure to park your stroller under covered protection in case a rogue rainstorm sets in while you are aboard a ride or at a show.

5. Wear a hat.

Even with your poncho in place, you may want a little extra protection from the elements when visiting SeaWorld Orlando in the rain. I wish I had worn a rain hat with my poncho so my hair didn’t end up looking like a tangled mess of stringy spaghetti. But hey, maybe you like that look?

6. Go under cover at SeaWorld Orlando in the rain.

As a former SeaWorld San Diego annual pass holder, I was a bit surprised to find many fewer aquariums at SeaWorld Orlando. Still, there are plenty of protected areas where you can spy on sea life out of the rain. Examples include the Jewel of the Sea Aquarium, the underwater dolphin-viewing area at Dolphin Cove, Stingray Lagoon, Shark Encounter, and the Turtle Trek theatre.

Most of the eateries at SeaWorld Orlando offer some form of protection from the elements, whether at indoor seating or under a covered patio area.

7. Bring extra socks or wear rain boots.

Boy, do I wish I had thought to bring extra socks when we went to SeaWorld on that rainy, rainy day! Our shoes were squishy pools of water by the time we left. To be safe, throw an extra pair for each family member into your day bag.

Even better than packing dry socks is keeping them dry in the first place. Who could resist jumping in puddles with super cute Hunter rain boots? They come in all sorts of colors for adults and kids, including my favorite — pink! Go take a look at the array of Hunter rain boots available from Zappos. And, remember, Zappos always offers free return shipping!

8. Buy umbrellas for all family members.

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could just huddle together like a happy family under one big umbrella? Umm…yeah…that’s not practical. Plus, the kids will be whining and fighting over who gets to hold the umbrella. Buy a compact umbrella for each family member instead. I suggest bringing umbrellas all in the same bright color so you can easily identify your brood amongst umbrella-toting tourists. (Maybe I’ll do that before our next trip!)

If traveling with young children, consider buying a stroller umbrella, too. It’s hard enough to navigate a theme park with a stroller and kids in the rain without trying to hold an umbrella at the same time!

9. Dress in layers.

My family visited SeaWorld Orlando during the summer. Although we got soaked, the temperature was pleasant, so it didn’t matter much. If visiting in the fall or winter and rain is expected, however, dress in layers. Then, you can take off and put on extra clothing as needed for warmth.

10. Embrace the rain.

Usually, I avoid water rides and the first few “soak zone” rows at amusement parks because I don’t like the wet socks, messy hair, and clinging clothing they produce. When it’s raining at SeaWorld, though, you’re going to get wet anyway. Why not embrace the rain? Jump in puddles! Sit in the front row! Get splashed on the Journey to Atlantis thrill ride! Most of all, have fun!

11. Save money on SeaWorld Orlando.

SeaWorld is fun and educational for all ages, no matter the weather. It’s even better, though, when you can save money on your SeaWorld Orlando visit! Undercover Tourist provides all sorts of savings, from discounted single day passes to even deeper discounts on multi-day and multi-park packages.
