Want to escape the kids for a few days of romance in Los Angeles? Take your sweetie to The Hotel Wilshire, where romantic touches combine with a boutique feel. A Kimpton Hotel, this property offers the hip design elements and offbeat extras you'd expect from this brand. My husband and I jumped at the chance to preview The Hotel Wilshire's Suite Surprise package, just in time for Valentine's Day. It's not too late to get  in on the love…the package is available through the end of February!

Kimpton extras

The Kimpton brand is known for their unusual perks, like complimentary bicycles available for tooling around your destination. We didn't make use of this during our stay at The Hotel Wilshire, but the pleasant attendant at the front desk assured us that many guests make use of the free set of wheels, even in a town known for its reliance on the automobile.

When we visited sister Kimpton property, the Hotel Monaco Seattle with our children, our temporary fish, Simon, elicited squeals of delight from our offspring. This handsome fish shown above greeted us at The Hotel Wilshire.

Suite at The Hotel Wilshire

Our Hotel Wilshire suite

Although not large, The Hotel Wilshire made the most of limited space within our one-bedroom suite, without making the room feel crowded. A long, narrow living space boasted a dining table, mini fridge and wet bar, flat screen television and sitting area. The bedroom, with its modern decor and soothing color palate, was home to a king-sized bed, closet, and another flat screen TV.

While there was no bath tub in which to soak, the shower was big enough for two lovebirds. My husband (a water pressure enthusiast) exclaimed after a long, hot dousing, “That seriously may be the best hotel shower I've ever used.” I appreciated the clever frosted glass panel, which allowed in light into the shower from the living space while maintaining privacy.

Rooftop pool and restaurant

For a dip in the hotel pool, drinks by a fire pit, or a poolside meal with an incredible view—head to the roof. Here you'll find a wee hotel pool, incredible views and The Roof on Wilshire, the aptly named hotel restaurant and bar. During the day you can even view the Hollywood sign in the distance.

The Roof on Wilshire provides a hip spot for a cocktail or two. My delightfully spicy Wilshire Mule with its house made ginger beer, vodka and bitters came topped with a lemon wedge and candied ginger. A complimentary wine reception is also available daily to all hotel guests inside, on the hotel's second floor.

Our Suite Surprise package included a $125 food and beverage credit. We put this money toward a romantic dinner with a view of Los Angeles' twinkling skyline. There are a few indoor seats but for the most part diners choose to eat al fresco, beside heat lamps for warmth. The best part (beyond the view) was our creamy yet crispy, savory yet sweet Walnut Risotto appetizer with butternut squash and fresh sage.
