I am giving holiday travel tips on 16 television programs and another dozen radio stations throughout the U.S. this Friday, November 15! As The Travel Mama, I’ll give advice on how to save money during your travels, what types of vacations are best for families, and how to prepare your household for your time away. I will post a link to one of the television segments on TravelMamas.com next week. In the meantime, here are some of my holiday travel tips to make your family vacation as merry as possible.
From crowded airports and bad weather causing delayed flights and road trip detours, the holiday travel season can be stressful. Plus, there’s so much to pack and remember—especially if you’re bringing gifts or traveling with young children who require lots of extra gear. My suggestion? Ship your packages ahead of time to avoid baggage fees and rent baby gear at your destination. Be sure to print a packing list to ensure you don’t forget any must-have items, too. You will definitely want to pack plenty of diversions for the kiddies to ensure a pleasant journey!
Pick the right place to stay
A key ingredient to family travel happiness is choosing the right accommodations. Even if you will be visiting family and friends over the holidays, you might want to consider booking a hotel room if you want to have your own space and you think too much family togetherness will cause unnecessary stress.
One of my favorite hotels is Hilton Garden Inn because I know I can count on them to provide consistent, welcoming service. I love the convenient extras they offer, like in-room Keurig coffee makers to make starting the day easier. Hilton Garden Inn provides complimentary WiFi to its hotel guests, something I wish more hotels would do.
Hilton Garden Inn offers cooked-to-order breakfasts at each of over 560 locations. This holiday season, guests who book the “Breakfast with Heart” weekend package room rate will receive complimentary breakfast while also supporting Hilton Garden Inn's efforts to provide meals for those in need through Feeding America. What a delicious way to do good during the holidays! For more information, visit HGI.com.
Choose budget-friendly fun for the whole family
I love family cruises because they offer so many fun activities for all ages. Choose from activities like swimming, kids clubs, spa treatments and even bowling at sea. Plus, your family gets to explore the world while unpacking just once.
Cruising can be a really budget-friendly vacation option if you choose the right cruise line. MSC Cruises is a European cruise line that now offers Caribbean cruises. Kids ages 11 and younger always sail FREE with MSC. How sweet is that?
The MSC Christmas cruises will be decked out with holiday decorations galore and offer religious services (including a midnight mass), visits with Santa, and holiday fun like cookie making. Find out more at MSCCruisesUSA.com.
Prep your home for departure
There’s so much to do to prep for you holiday travels, it’s hard to know where to begin. To make your travel planning easier, check out my Travel with Children Checklist.
One important step in preparing your home for departure is making sure that your furry children will be well-cared for while you’re away. Rather than leaving your dog in an expensive kennel, consider using DogVacay.com instead. This site matches pet owners with pet hosts so Fido can stay in a loving home over the holidays. Check out DogVacay.com to peruse pet sitting options now!
