Happiest Travel Memories

I was asked to share a few of my happiest travel memories to coincide with Lay’s potato chips’ Happiness Exhibit, a campaign that showcases the moments of simple happiness that people treasure most. Share one of your happiest travel memories in the comments below for a chance to win a $200 gift card to Southwest Airlines, provided by Lay’s potato chips!

Happiness is Family
When we travel with family, the focus isn’t on work, school, and never-ending to-do lists. Family vacations allow us to spend quality time with people we love, live more fully in the present moment, take notice of our surroundings, and enjoy life. This must be why my daughter often cries at the end of a vacation, “But I don’t wanna go home!”

And, it must be why so many of my happiest childhood memories took place while on a family vacation…swimming in indoor hotel pools with the gleeful calls of “Marco! Polo!” echoing against the walls…playing 20 questions in the backseat of our spitfire orange station wagon…or knowing I was safe on Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride because my dad told me my green Mickey Mouse ears would protect me. I am pictured above at age four (sporting my magical green mouse ears) with my brother and Pluto at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Happiness is Getting Away from it All
One of the happiest moments of any trip for me is after I arrive at my destination and I realize, “Hey, I’m on vacation!” Here I am pictured with my son, Leo, with my hometown San Diego in the background on a Carnival Cruise to Mexico. A sweet thing about a cruise is, the minute you step onboard, your vacation starts!

Happiness is Being Together
Since my two siblings and I live in three different states and we each have families of our own, it is a very rare occasion when we, our children, and our parents are all able to meet in one place. We made a point to get together in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a few days of family fun in the sun before my brother, a naval officer, was deployed to Iraq for six months.

While it was thrilling to swim with dolphins in The Bahamas and to climb a waterfall in Jamaica, most of my happiest travel memories take place when doing simple things with people I love. By far my favorite memory of this trip was simply splashing around in one of the hotel’s pools with the whole family.

In total, there were fourteen family members who went on this multi-generation vacation. From left to right, pictured above are my niece Siobhan, husband Phil, nephew Trevor, and sister Karen hamming it up at the pool at Solmar Resort.

Happiness is Relaxation
It is a happy moment indeed when children successfully take a nap while on vacation! This is especially true when such a nap takes place poolside at a beautiful resort, allowing for a mid-day snooze or dip in the pool for the Travel Mama and Travel Daddy! Here’s a photo of my daughter, Karissa, asleep in her stroller at the Kauai Marriott Resort in Kauai, Hawaii.

Happiness is Dreaming
I spent a lot of time visualizing taking my baby to Disneyland to distract myself from contractions during a very, very, very long labor with my firstborn. I couldn’t think of a happier place to be. It is, after all, The Happiest Place on Earth!

So, for my daughter’s first birthday rather than throwing her a birthday party, we took a three-day trip to Disneyland. Did the trip live up to my expectations? I think this picture of Karissa clapping with joy on her inaugural Disney ride aboard Dumbo’s back says it all!

Happiness is Simple
The message of the Lay’s potato chips’ Happiness Exhibit is that the happiest moments in our lives are truly the simple ones. From the online exhibit, select photos will be chosen to be featured on millions of Lay’s potato chip bags. You can submit photos that showcase simple, happy moments to Lays.com. Submitting photos on the Lay’s site does not affect your chance of winning the Happiest Travel Memories Contest on TravelMamas.com but it sure would be fun to see your photo on a bag of Lay’s potato chips!

My favorite travel memory is walking the Balboa Island pier in Newport Beach, looking into the eyes of my sweetheart David. There was a large golden moon, the air temperature perfect, and the air felt electric because this is where we felt a heart and soul connection and fell in love.

  11. Before our first son was born, my hubby and I took a 10 day trip to Paris. I just adore that city! And one day we found a neighborhood that wasn’t swarming with tourists, sat down at an outdoor corner cafe and just watched the world go by. It was so relaxing, fascinating and perfect in every way. And then we walked down the street and found a sweet little baby shop, where we bought items for a “someday” child; little did we know I was actually already pregnant! :)

Our happiest family travel memories was a trip to Chacala, Mexico – a small and quiet fishing village 2 hrs from Puerto Vallarta. We spent Christmas there 2 years ago. We stayed at a retreat center called Mar de Jade. All guests got to know each other through dining together in a big dining hall, the kids played with each other. There were daily Christmas programs to keep the kids busy while adults could just stroll along the beach or enjoy time by the pool.

  27. Tari Lawson says:

I remember the first time we took our youngest son to Disney World. He wasn’t talking much so for weeks we practiced how to say hi to Mickey Mouse. When we got to the parks we went on our Mickey hunt. While my husband and older son were riding Mission Space, my youngest and I went to see some of the characters. Mickey wasn’t there. While we were waiting in line, the characters changed and out came Mickey Mouse. My son’s face lit up and he began waving saying “Hi, Mickey”. It was priceless.

  28. Heather S says:

When we were little one morning my parents woke my sister and me up and put us in the car. We fell asleep and when we woke up we where at Disney World. You don’t know the excitement of 2 little girls waking up to see Mickey Mouse. I will never forget that trip.

  49. karen campanale says:

Any time I go to Disney World with my family qualifies as a happy vacation memory. Just watching my childrens faces as we all walk through the gates is enough to bring tears to my eyes and fill we with a lifetime of happiness

  50. My happiest travel memory was the last vacation trip my parents took before they passed away. They went to the Black Hills with my husband and I and our two little ones. The kids loved having Grandma and Grandpa along and is something they will always remember. The pictures we have are priceless.

  51. My husband and I have been fortunate enough to make travel a priority for ourselves and our two children. Narrowing this down to my “happiest” travel memory is hard. However, I can tell you that one of the happiest travel memories I have was when we took a trip to Maine when my son (now 9) was only 18 months old. I watched, and listened, with my own eyes and ears as his vocabulary exploded. Being in a new place gave the ability to rapidly acquire new words. He would have not learned sand, seagull, shells and ocean at home nearly as early.

  53. M. Reismeyer says:

The best travel memory I have is of when a friend and I drove cross-country. It was the first time I’d seen the SW, including the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas was a blast, and we didn’t gamble a nickel.

  54. Autumn B. says:

one of my happiest travel memories was going on my honeymoon to jamaica – a week of laying in the sun can make anyone happy!

  55. Arriving at Glacier Point in Yosemite just before dawn, and finding myself standing amid dozens of wild deer.

  56. watching my daughter play in the world cup in soccer

  57. Diane R. says:

Exploring the Potala Palace in Lhasa.

  58. We visited Zion in Utah one February. The whole family went and hiked.

  59. Husband and me and our two teen age children at Disney World – since they were no longer babies we could either stay together or go our separate ways. I was surprised at how many activities we did together – they even enjoyed Epcot as much as I did.

  60. Kathleen C says:

It would have to be a tie between five things, and they all happened in the same place:

    1) kids caught an octopus
    2) I caught a nurse shark
    3) kids caught a flounder with a net (dumb fish)
    4) saw a manatee
    5) followed a sea turtle in our canoe

These all happened in a state park in the keys and that place is loaded with exciting/happy memories for us. They might not seem like much, but they sure made for a happy day for us!

  61. Kathleen C says:
  62. brenda helgeson says:

My fave was the first time I took my daughter, age 4, to disneyland. Just the look of wonder she had when we entered made me tear up.

  63. John Stetson says:

Myh happiest memory is of the round the world trip my wife and I took when I won it. We particularly enjoyed the tours of the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace in Istanbul.

  64. My favorite travel memory was the trip I took with my first son to the beach a month before he died. The pictures of him smiling on the sand just melt my heart and bring tears to my eyes

  65. My happiest travel memory was going to Orlando, Florida, with my husband, son and my husband’s family. We rented a house and were spending all day at the Disney Parks. My son was having a HORRIBLE time at the parks because he didn’t want to do grown up things with the grown ups. I was tired too, so we ended up leaving the Epcot Center and going back to the rental house and we hung out and swam. It was great getting to spend that one on one time with him! We did have a great day at the Magic Kingdom because that is where he got to run around and play!

  66. My happiest travel moment would be to Vegas a few years back. Walking the street was nice. We found the best entertainment in our hotel as opposed to other casinos.

  67. My happiest memory is from two summers ago when we went to the Upper Peninsula of MI with our kids. We didn’t spend a lot but we did have a blast swimming in Lake Superior and laying out on the beach.

  68. Jessica Bennett says:

When I was young the whole of my mother’s side of the family used to go down to Ocean City NJ for a week. I loved it! I was with my cousins all week and our grandparents spoiled us! We would swim all day and roam the boardwalk at night. My mother told us we could pick one snack a night and my brother and I would discuss our “snack schedule” which night to get icecream, fudge, soft pretzel, etc. So fun!

  69. My happiest travel moment was when the whole family took our first big trip to Disney World in 1998, it was a dream come true!

  70. Going to Disney World in Florida, taking a picture with Pluto and having him lift up my hair braid just before the flash!

  71. Meredith says:

My happiest moment was traveling to DC a few years ago getting to share our Nation’s capital with my husband.

  74. My happiest trip memory was traveling by myself through France and Italy in college. I felt so independent and free. That feeling is amazing.

  75. One of my happiest travel memories was a girls trip with my mom, grandma, and cousin to Puerto Rico. It was so nice to spend time with them in such a beautiful place.

  76. Vicki Andrew says:

I went to New Orleans with my daughter this past Dec, I love the city and just loved showing it to her

  77. Monique Rizzo says:

Mine is road tripping it to Disneyland with my family!
    Thanks for the chance.

  78. My happiest travel memory is of going to Boston for my grandfather’s 95th birthday! He was so happy to see me. He died the next week, and I was so glad that I had managed to visit him in time.

  79. My happiest travel memory is sitting by the fire while camping in Yellowstone with my family. Thanks!

  80. I traveled with my family a lot growing up, and now my husband and I make it a priority with our daughter, so it’s hard to pick just one happy travel memory. But I’ll go with this: we used to go to a small resort in Wisconsin called Nippersink during the same week every summer. It was my parents, my two younger siblings, and I. The first time we went, we met other families with children the same ages as the three of us, and we all became fast friends (parents included). So we planned subsequent trips at the same time with the same families for several years. It was the type of resort that had planned daily activities for kids of all ages, so the kids got to go off and have fun and socialize, while the parents got to have some quiet time. I thought it was the most fun ever! More than twenty years later, my family still talks about our Nippersink memories.

  81. If I win the Happiest Travel Memories Contest on TravelMamas.com I will go to Arizona because my daughter can then visit her grandpa!

  82. My happiest travel memory is spending my 18th birthday in London with my family when we were vacationing there!

  83. As posted on Facebook: If I win the Happiest Travel Memories Contest on TravelMamas.com I will go to Las Vegas because I believe it is one of the best domestic destinations that showcases an international flavor – and it is never too early to nurture my son’s curiosity to explore the world!

  84. One of my happiest travel memories was when we traveled to India with our 6 month old son, Alexander. My husband is from India and it was the first time his parents had an opportunity to see their first grandchild! The joy on their faces when they could hold him, hug him, and kiss him brought tears to my eyes. We look forward to raising him in a multicultural environment with loving families in two countries!

  85. Mellissa C says:

When I was thirteen my family went to our family reunion in georgia. We drove and went to six flags in atlanta and then after the reunion we went to florida to disney world. It was a Blast.

  87. One of my happiest travel memories was watching my son take some of his first steps on the streets of Barcelona! And we have it on video! It was so exciting to see him navigate the cobblestone and wonder around. HE would fall and get right back up! And then minutes after I changed his diaper right there on the same street because there was not a bathroom near by. Ya do what cha gotta do!

  88. lori Hart says:

We recently took a ride up to Yellowstone. It was my first long trip on a motorcycle. We rode up with friends and through the park the next day. It was so fun to be outside in the open air… the most intersting part was when there was a buffalo walking down the road while we were right next to him. Scary but fun at the same time.

  89. One very happy travel memory I have is camping with my Brother and Sister In Law in the Sequoia’s. It was a pretty isolated campground, but it was next to a stream. My four year old had a delightful time playing in the mud and water the whole week. I can still picture him in a muddy faded blue sweatshirt that had belonged to his dad as a child. Just so much fun witnessing that child like bliss!

  90. If I win the Happiest Travel Memories Contest on TravelMamas.com I will go to Philidelphia because my best friend lives there and I miss her madly!

  91. Happiest travel memory? That’s easy. Getting engaged while on a houseboating trip at Lake Powell. :-)

  92. I’d have to say winter camping in our canvas tent for 2 nights was one of the best travel memories we’ve ever had as a family. It was so cozy, pretty and bitterly cold all at the same time!

  96. My happiest travel memory was actually not that long ago. (Last year actually) My husband and 10 year old twins went to Disneyland. We spent the weekend at the hotel, got to order pasta delivery to the room, hang out with each other in the room, and spend a whole day at Disneyland! That place truly is the Happiest Place on Earth! It is magical, and always has been since I was a child. I really enjoy the happiness in the kids’ eyes and pure joy! (I am sure it is showing in my eyes as well!!) The economy has been especially hard on us, and it made it that much more special to the kids, being a special rare treat and all. I had won the hotel stay, and got the tickets to Disneyland for super cheap online! Everything about the trip was magical!

  98. Deborah R says:

I took my son to a family resort in the Bahamas when he was 12 years old. After we checked in, he ran down to the beach to check it out while I unpacked our bags. I stepped out on the balcony and saw there were a lot of topless women on the beach (which was supposed to be illegal) and I was worried that my son would be uncomfortable…and we were going to be there for a week.

He came running up to the room, calling “Mom! Mom! OMG, Mom!” and I’m thinking rut roh…

He says “There are women on the beach…who…have…hair growing under their arms!”

I darn near died from trying to hold back the laughter. And it still makes me laugh today.

  99. Ken Smith says:

Bungie Jumping in Squaw Valley with my soon to be wife.

  100. My happiest travel memory was from just a few weeks ago. Seeing my kids see the ocean for the first time was priceless

  101. I enjoyed myself in Jamaica. It was the best vacation I’ve ever had & I’ve been on many vacations, but Jamaica is truly one of my best. In 2006 I was planning to go to vacation in Jamaica…looked to where I wanted to go… Then a miracle happened… I won a trip to anywhere in the world on a locale radio station (KTWV the Wave in Los Angeles) and the stage was set. We left and had the experience of a lifetime… Jamaica is so beautiful, green & lush.

  102. Jennifer Miller says:

My happiest travel memory was just this year. My husband and I went to Vancouver for the Olympics and while the games were unforgettable and extremely amazing…the mountains made that trip for me. I had never seen the mountains until then and I remember being taken aback at their massiveness and their beauty upon arrival. I couldn’t get enough of them; I had to and commanded to see them every day of our trip even though you couldn’t miss them. On our departure back to the midwest I cried like a baby. I will never forget that and can’t wait to see them again. They were truly awe inspiring.

  103. Jennifer Miller says:
  104. Although i would love to make new Travel Memories(Fantasy of Greece) I have fun memories of my school trips! We visited Niagara Falls, Dearborn Michigan and the the Henry Ford Museum,7th grade camp and the best was the 8th grade field trip to Washington DC.

  105. My husband and I went on a liveaboard dive boat on the Great Barrier Reef and toured part of Australia. This was the most awesome trip I could imagine!! There is no other diving like what we did, way out in the Coral Sea. Then doing the Sydney Harbor Bridge climb was marvelous! We also visited Steve Irwin’s zoo and other interesting places. It’s truly a loooong flight, but so worth going!! Thanks.

  106. Heather McDonough says:

I’m pretty sure my favorite travel memory hasn’t happened yet, since my husband and I will be taking our son on our first “family vacation” next month to Florida!

  107. Linda Lansford says:

My happiest travel trip was when I took my son to Washington DC. All of the things he had only seen on TV became real. His face lite up for weeks.

  108. My favorite traveling memory is going to London with my Mom 2 years ago. My father had recently passed away and this was a special trip for just the two of us. We made so many great memories and saw so many cool things. We are going to Rome next!!

  109. Christine Sarkauskas says:

My happiest travel memory is the first time my boyfriend and I went to Las Vegas. He is a HUGE elton John fan and had always wanted to go. We had just started dating and one day I decided, that’s it, he is going to see his idol in concert( my boyfriend also plays keyboard) and bought tickets to the Red paino concert at ceasers. I called him up and let him know! At first he thought I was crazy, but a few months later we boarded the plane, and off we jetted to see Elton!

We only had 600 dollar spending money for 3 days in Vegas. We thought we were rock stars, and came home without a dime in our pockets.

I always look back fondly on that trip!

Now that the kids are grown, we love to go places with them and their SO’s. We relax, laugh and generally just enjoy being together. Just makes me happy to be with the kids and hubby this way. The place doesn’t really matter, it’s the company.

  113. Rebecca Doerr says:

Eventually, once it was all said and done, I landed at the airport, to be greeted by my parents with smiles on their faces and a few tears in their eyes :D It was almost something out of a movie.

  131. We went with my entire family (all 19 of us) to Disney World for 10 days in January and this was our first time taking the kids. It was great to be there all together getting to spend time with different family members. We had taken my other daughters to Disneyland when they were little and they hated the characters they cried and didn’t want anything to do with them so we weren’t sure how our 19 month old daughter would do with them. The first character she saw was Goliath from JoJo’s circus and she immediately went running up to him and wouldn’t let go she was hugging him so tight it was so cute- Goliath wrapped his arms right around her in a big bear hug and wouldn’t give her back. There wasn’t a line of other kids waiting to see him so they both just stood there for about 5 minutes- Goliath kept shoeing us as away and the park photographer just kept snapping pictures (we definitely had to buy that CD with all those pictures).

  132. My whole family took a trip to see my grandma on a train! The trip took almost 20 hours and we had a great time!

  133. My husband and I went to Oahu and Maui in 1990 and had a dream vacation. We went boogie boarding, climbed Diamond Head, spent a day on Lanai Island and everything went so smoothly! It even rained one day while the sun was shining and there were no clouds in the sky!

  134. My teenaged granddaughter and I took a driving vacation through Ireland. We got lost and we found amazing things and we talked for hours on end. A marvelous trip!

  140. I have to smile a big smile every time I think of the trips I took as a high schooler with my parents to both Disney/Busch Gardens and also Gulf Shores, AL. My mom & I laughed so hard a couple of times we were paralyzed for a few minutes. I haven’t laughed that hard in 20 years. I still have the little, zippered pouch my dad bought me. He passed away from pancreatic cancer 4 years ago.

  141. I’m on your distribution list now. Thanks!!

  142. My happiest travel memory. We took the children on a tour of the northwest. We visited Oregon’s pristeen beaches, Washington’s amazing, green forests, we even went to Utah to explore dinosaur ruins. It was a wonderful trip and we all learned so much. I loved watching my children’s faces as they fed chipmonks and ran through the woods, on beaches…it was the best!

    Thank you. :-)

  151. When my family and I rode in a cab heading over the Brooklyn Bridge, the radio in the cab played the theme song from “Taxi.” We experienced the same opening sequence we saw each week in the TV show, Taxi. We simply looked at each other, mouths agape. Magic!

  152. Molly Capel says:

I loved going to Vegas with my dh. Especially on or honeymoon.

  153. My happiest travel memory was when I was about 8 years old and in Tahiti with my family. This was the only cruise I remember being on with my grandma. My grandma has been gone for almost 25 years yet I still have the shell that I bought with her quarter.

One of my happiest travel memories was when my husband and I took our kids on vacation to Savannah, GA, the city where all of them were born. It was fun going to places from their early childhood (our house, the preschool my son attended, the restaurant I used to work at). We even stayed in the hotel that my husband and I had installed all of the landscaping for with our landscaping business (THe Courtyard by Marriott) and see how big all the trees and plants had become since we left. The kids had a blast and I loved going down memory lane with them (Plus we visited Tybee Island LIghthouse and my youngest is a lighthouse fanatic ..don’t know why…and he loved climbing to the top..although I have to say my thighs didn’t!!!

On the last day of our trip, we were laying in bed with the sliding door open listening to the waves lap the beach. It was then that we decided on a name for our daughter – Nora. It was perfect, and a moment I’ll never forget.

  163. One of my happiest travel memories was simply getting to be there for my sister who is several years younger than me when she graduated from high school. I live a couple thousand miles away and it was so great to be able to be there for one of her milestones.

By far my happiest memory would have to be when my entire family (19 of us) traveled to Disney World. We had such a fabulous time! We are Disney lovers and being with our whole family was so great. We did a few things all together and it was so wonderful to have all of us there spending a Magical time together.

  172. Emily Robison says:

I became a travel Mama!! Even though I don’t have kids, I am still really interested!

  173. I love to travel anywhere with my Family, they live in MN and TX and I live in OK. Went to FL last year with MN Sister her husband and son. We had many laughs. But last year was a great travel memory – I flew to Germany to visit a friend for two weeks and we visited Austria as well. In Vienna there was this funny statue actor impersonating Mozart. My friend went up to him and put money in his hat and he kissed her hand. We laughed hard over that one.

  174. Ten years ago I went on tour with my high school choir. It was a very long week of chartered buses, but that’s where I really got to be good friends with a boy who eventually became my husband!

Happiest travel moment was last month when the boyfriend and I went to the Riviera Maya and he left his backpack in the taxi, with his passport!!!! He tried to chase down the taxi but with no success. I was in tears and of all people the valet attendant took one of the cars parked in the valet lane and caught up to the taxi driver. PHEWWWWW. I honestly couldn’t have been happier. Just thinking about not having a passport in another country is gut wrenching. They trip was by far the most amazing trip ever!

  177. On of my happiest memories is climbing into sleeping bags in the back of our station wagon in the dead of night and then waking up in Florida on our way to Disney. I remember the sleeping in sleeping bags in the back of the car more than I do the actual Disney part! It was different and exciting. :D

  178. When I was a little girl my grandparents used to take my sister and I all over the Southwest for extended road trips. While I didn’t realize how awesome this was at the time, I can look back and successfully say that my grandparents not only were really awesome, but took me to small towns I would have never had the chance to enjoy and also took us on some phenomenal camping trips.

  179. Nearly all of my happy travel memories involve Disney. My happiest though? The time we visited Walt Disney World just after my husband had returned home from Iraq. It was unbelievably blissful to be united again…and the magical atmosphere certainly didn’t hurt!

  180. Lachelle says:

My parents took my siblings and I on a Carribbean cruise 5 years ago. At the time my mom had terminal breast cancer so we knew it would be our last family vacation with the whole family so we went all out. My mom didn’t stop and we lived it up for a week! I am so grateful for those memories.

  181. jeffery wheeler says:

When I was a teenager we went on a 2 week trip down the east coast of Florida to key west and back up the west coast. Still love key west

  182. Tim, the girls, and I flew to Disneyland and then up to Washington State this past November. It was a memorable, marvelous trip – we talked about it for months afterward (truth be told, we’re still talking about it…!). We laughed. We hiked. We took pictures. We spent time with friends. We rode Dumbo and Peter Pan – and we ate ice cream cones on Main Street. The whole thing was absolutely magical.

  183. My happiest travel moment was when my family attended the Disney Social Meida Moms Conference at Disney World. We went to a special party hosted by Disney at the ESPN Zone. My son, known for playing Nintendo DS through dinner, throw down the video game and partied like a rock star. Disney is totally the happiest place on earth!

  184. My parents paid for me and my 5 year old daughter to fly to Malaysia and stay with them for 2 weeks. The culture was so different from ours in the states and it was a perfect opportunity to teach my young daughter how people on the opposite side of the world live. We got to help feed orphans, visit families who lived in shacks, taste the yummy food, and experience what Malaysia is all about. I will never forget my trip there and I cherish the memories made from it.

  197. One of my happiest travel memories is arriving for my sister’s wedding, 6 wk old baby in arms, and being greeted by my mother with the statement–We have to get you to the beauty parlor! This was after she grabbed the baby. Part of the reason it is a good memory is the help I received on the trip–I had several transfers, and people were so nice in assisting with all the stuff one needs with a baby (and this was WAY before all the little carts, etc., that are available now).

  198. My happiest travel memory is when my family traveled across the US in our motorhome. I remember having super fun times giggling with my sister on the trip. I also remember meeting lots of neat people. It’s a trip I won’t forget!

  202. My favorite travel memory was when I was a kid. My parents laid blankets in the back of my dad’s pickup and put us 3 kids back there. We drove all over the state of California for 2 weeks. Great great memories!!

  203. In 1995 I spent a year on the road with my family. We wintered on the eastern part of Crete. One of my favorite memories dates back to my Birthday – which coincides with Greek Independence day. The local hotel owner who we had booked an extended stay with, a large group of Norwegian women who ware wintering in the hotel, and my folks all put together a fantastic birthday party for me. The highlight of which was a Birthday cake…but not just any birthday cake. This one had a large telephone card on it made out of icing. Sound odd? While traveling I started collecting telephone cards like most people collect baseball cards – it was a fun way to pick up mementos from different countries, and most were actually rather beautiful.

Needless to say, it was an incredibly welcoming and warm experience – one spent with family and travel friends, who opened their arms and hearts to near strangers.

My happiest travel memory–We took the children too Disneyland, for 4 days we got to stay at the Grand California Hotel and the kids were old enough that we no longer had to carry them. We had a blast, the kids were in heaven we would get up early and go on all the best rides then come back and eat and take naps during the hot part of the day we hit the hotel pool—then in the cool of the evening it was back to the rides. The hotel was literally in the California Adventure park—it made going back to the hotel a breeze—and we had so much amazing food. We got to go to a character breakfast–which was an absolute blast–fabulous buffet with amazing food—and all our favorite Disney characters stopping by the table to take pictures with the kids. If you made a purchase they would deliver your bags to the hotel–oh and at night in the hotel they had an amazing scavanger hunt —the prize we got to go in a secret room full of delicious treats—it was really the trip of a lifetime!!!

  256. One of my favorite travel memories happened very recently. Long story short: Two aunts A &B, an uncle C, a cousin D, and I flew to Toronto for another aunt’s funeral. (These are relatives that I’m not very close to, for a variety of reasons.) Every night, Aunt A, cousin D, our Canadian Cousin A, and I would have nightly pow-wows, to go over what happened during that day, frustrations we were feeling toward some family members, etc. In those short 5 days, I felt like I gained three best friends and can now call/email/txt anytime for another pow-wow or send silly messages to. While the occasion was somber, the outcome of our trip was a feeling of bonding. Our Fantastic Foursome is now solidified.

My first trip as an adult. I was twenty, and my boyfriend and I went to San Diego for 3 days so I could interview a producer and director for a movie. I was so happy on that trip because I finally felt like I was a grownup and going out and doing things on my own.

  260. Mary Andrews says:

My happiest memory comes from our recent trip to Walt Disney World. I took my mom for the first time ever and seeing her face light up when we walked in through the International Gateway from our hotel was priceless. Then I told her, “Today, Mom, I get to give you the World!” She cried and it was a very beautiful and touching moment.

  261. My happiest{maybe not at the time} travel memeory was when I was about 10 years old, my mom and dad decided we were going to Disney Land! Me, my older sister and two younger brothers couldn’t be more thrilled, until we found out we were driving! We soon got over the whole driving thing-WE ARE GOING TO DISNEY LAND!! Our trip started off relatively normal until we got about 30 minutes from home nd dad had to stop and use the restroom and insisted that we all go in and go{which we just left the house, so nobody needed to go!} Well he locked the keys in the station wagon! So we had to sit 30 minutes from home and wait 4 hours for a locksmith! On the road again, can’t wait to get on the road again! We eventually made it to California, we had a great time, we had a blast at Disney Land. I won a huge bear-seriously it was as tall as I was and a lot wider! I didn’t care if I had to ride in the back of the station wagon with my bear, I was bringing my winnings home! We shoved the bear into the back of the station wagon with me and took off.{Nobody wanted to ride in the back of the station wagon, as it faced the on-coming cars!} After about half an hour riding back to a cousins house from Disney Land, I looked up to see our luggage rack flying down the California freeway! I started screaming for my dad to pull over that our luggage was sliding down the road, he didn’t believe me, until my mom turned around to see the sparks and clothes flying out of the luggage and luggage rack! She started to scream at him to pull over. Next thing I new, the cars were now right in my face, he didn’t pull over, he whipped the car into reverse and started driving backwards down the freeway! He got to where the luggage rack had stopped pulled up to it, opened up the hatchback where my bear and I were sitting and started shoving the luggage rack into the back with us! I sat there not able to move thinking-”Do I have to ride all the way back to Utah like this?” My dad eventually stopped at my cousins house and he and my cousin rigged the luggage rack back ontop of the station wagon. After this trip we were dubbed the Grizwolds!
When I was younger, I was absolutely embarresed by the happenings of our trip to Disney Land, but now that I am older, all I can remeber is the fun that we had-including the luggage rack incident! If I were to win this, I would be able to take my son to Disney without having a luggage rack mishap!
    Thank you for the opprotunity!

  265. Theresa Clift says:

My happiest travel memory would be when we drove from Ohio to Orlando to take our then 6 year old daughter to Disney World. I can only hope that the memory of her smiles and joy in being at the happiest place on Earth will stay with me for a lifetime. Thanks for the opportunity.

My favorite travel memory is my 1st visit to Disney World when I was 14. Now at 36 it is still one of my favorite vacation spots!

  267. My happiest travel memory, just occured recently. After having a son who has been a rough traveler since he was born (he turns 2 on Monday), we finally had the BEST vacation ever on a trip to Maui. I was worried to take him so far from home but we packed up our family and brought my mom along as a surprise and she was our extra help when we needed her. My kids had the best time just playing on the beach almost everyday and we adults had a wonderful time being on the beach as well. Now I can look forward to more wonderful family trip memories and can’t wait!

One of my happiest travel memories is of the trip we took to Florida right before I got pregnant with my son. It was our last trip just as a couple (probably for a looooong time!) and we went to fancy restaurants, soaked in the jacuzzi tub in our room, and laid around on the beach for hours. Vacations with my son are more fun, in some ways at least, but nowhere near as restful! :-)

  277. Went to Thailand with my mother when I was in my 30′s – our first major trip together. We had some rough patches, but it was a wonderful way to connect!

We just got back 2 weeks ago from our first vacation in over 11 years. We went to Myrtle Beach and my 4 youngest kids had NEVER seen a beach!!! I had to make this right and used some of our tax return to book the vacation. As soon as we pulled up I was trying to make sure our room was ready, get the key verified and make sure our vehicle didn’t get towed away. The kids were itching to get to the other side of the building on the beach. Hubby took them whilst I was being ill with the hotel people and when I came around the corner and saw how ecstatic they were running in the ocean water it made all that mad fall away.

  289. One of my greatest vacation memories happened many years ago. My grandparents took my sister and I to Disneyworld, and we stayed in their 5th wheel camper in a nice RV park outside of Orlando. We had a fun time, many memorable events, and had a few laughs as well. Now my grandfather is suffering from Alzheimer’s and not himself any longer, and my grandmother has to work to support herself, as well as to afford for him to be in full time care. I think that makes my memories from that vacation all the more special. :-)

  290. My boyfriend and I once took a spur of the moment drive up Highway 1 on the California Coast; we drove to the Muir woods and spent all day. It was marvelous and romantic and lovely.

My favorite travel would have to be the high school trip I took with my best friends and favorite teacher to southern Italy and Sicily. It was really a two-week dream exploring the ruins of Rome, the romance and charm of smaller cities like Sorrento, browsing in shops and meeting the locals, throwing a coin in the Trevi fountain, being awed by the Coliseum, and, at the end of each day, reflecting on our adventure over amazing food (and wine, my first time drinking it!). So far that experience has not been matched, but I am returning to Europe in a few weeks to go to Paris, so that might change!

  310. My happiest memory was going to Disney World when I was a kid. 20 hours in a car is a long time for a kid, especially on the way to an exciting place, but it taught me patience and how to entertain oneself that I believe carries with us when older.

  314. My favorite travel memory is from March of this year. We have been trying for two years running to get the two oldest to Rome (where their heritage is), but our oldest is in the military and both vacations just didn’t work out. So, instead of just cancelling the trip, we decided instead to take the 17-yr. old to Prague in the Czech Republic. What a surprisingly wonderful trip. The city was so full of youth and fun, and wonderful, wonderful buildings. My favorite moment from the trip was the moment our son stepped out of the airport to get in the car waiting for us. He was mesmerized like a little boy at how different it was from home. I loved that moment.
